Fraps Review

Fraps is a program to display frame rates and compute benchmarks, that is often used for games. Many gamers find Fraps to be useful for capturing screenshots while playing games since Fraps can take screencaptures without navigating away from a game. Another use that is useful is video capture of gameplay so that gamers can share their exploits with the friends.

Capturing video is very hard disk intensive since Fraps can support video resolutions up to 7680x4800. Fraps uses its own proprietary codec that does not compress video as greatly as other codecs so the video files can be quite large. Full HD video can take many gigabytes even if the video very short.

Video files can be stored as one file or split depending on length. If gamers want to have one large file, then transcoding the smaller files can join them together for easier playback. There are some limits on Fraps, however, including watermarking and a 30-second time limit.

The benchmarking feature shows the frames per second that a game is rendering in the corner of the screen. Custom benchmarks can also be set up to measure the duration between two frames.
